My parents instilled in me from an early age the value of education and the idea that almost every problem has a solution, no matter how difficult or unusual it is. This is something that I have tried to apply to my life every time I have been confronted with a difficult or problematic situation. I believe that it is not the situations that you encounter that measure your character but how you respond to them. Almost everyone faces a point in their life where the things seem insurmountable, like the world is against you. It is at these points that people will, to use a tired cliché, sink or swim.
My personal trial came in the shape of severe depression and school. Early during the course of university studies I became severely depressed to the point that it threw my life into a tail-spin which almost destroyed me. I lost all will to do anything, I became despondent and isolated myself from all my friends and family. But, through a lot of hard work and I brought myself out of it, sought help and have landed back on my feet and stopped wasting time.
Time is the one thing in the world that we can never get back, once a moment has passed it is gone forever. This is one of the principles that I hold dear and try to live my life accordingly. Central to this idea is our chosen method of spending the time which we have been allotted in life. It is my belief that we should all endeavor to make that which we have selected as our pastime, the very best it can be. Many people choose family, friends, sports, and a host of other things to spend their time on. For me, every since I arrived in the United Sates as a child, I have had a fascination with computers and video games in general.
To me, the measure of one’s ability can be found in the quality of what they choose to produce. To me a truly original, well planed, written, and executed game is just as valuable as any piece of art. Programming is a challenging and exciting field because so much of it is up to you. There are tools that have been created for you to use, or you may create your own. Total creative control is yours, hence the final product really reflects your dedication and skill.
